.NET 4 Installation Failure: IDOK. INSTALLMESSAGE_ERROR [The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed: 0x80070643
Hi, I have a fresh installation of Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 X64 SP2. It's fully patched. It's an IBM server and I used their system tools to install it as a second DC in an Active Directory Integrated contex. As part of a LOB application install which runs on SQL Server Express 2008, the .NET 4 Framework attempted to install with the following result: ******************************LOG SNIPPET************************************************* [6/7/2012, 16:29:16]Log File C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.CPA\LOCALS~1\Temp\Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup_20120607_162851386-MSI_netfx_Core_x64.msi.txt does not yet exist but may do at Watson upload time [6/7/2012, 16:29:16]Calling MsiInstallProduct(D:\7151458e18a5b289b397\netfx_Core_x64.msi, EXTUI=1 [6/7/2012, 16:34:9] Returning IDOK. Ran the .NET cleanup utility and attempted reinstalling (both stand-alone and as part of the LOB install). 2. Reinstalled the latest Windows Installer 3. Checked the registry to make sure that the correct entries are there. <<<< This is where I'm unsure of the information given in this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/thread/bd70740c-f6b6-4e1f-ba1f-c47a1846348a My entries are: MsiExecCA32 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe MsiExecCA64 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe Since this is a backup application server and my client would be in dire straights if their primary server were to fail, I need to get this resolved asap. Hi Wayne, Error 1603 (also shown as 0x80070643) is a generic "I've had issues" failure code and doesn't mean much on its own. There is some additional information relating to "Error 1603:1923 is mapped to Custom Error: Retry", but given it's a custom error, it doesn't give me enough to being looking for the root cause. On about the fourth log line, you have this: [6/7/2012, 16:36:13]MSI (D:\7151458e18a5b289b397\netfx_Core_x64.msi) Installation failed. Msi Log: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup_20120607_162851386-MSI_netfx_Core_x64.msi.txt I'd try looking for that Windows Installer log file for more specific information on what's going wrong. As a tip here, sometimes the logs from an installation only exist while it's running and are removed afterwards, so if you don't find it at first (should be under your C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.CPA\LOCALS~1\Temp directory), run the installation again and grab a copy of it (or just open it in Notepad since it doesn't try to create a non-sharing file lock) while the final error dialog is still open. For some reason, this does feel familiar to me, though I haven't worked with Server 2003 for so very long now that I don't want to say anything just yet on account of my recollection being poor. I'd rather see what the log says first. Cheers, Lain

Hi, Please run .NET cleanup utility, manually download and install Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0 again to check the result. If the issue persists, we can perform the following troubleshooting suggestions to troubleshoot the Windows Update issue: Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue. Suggestion 2: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update service. Suggestion 3: Reset Windows Update components to check the result. For the detailed steps, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 Suggestion 4: Run the System Update Readiness tool (Checksur.exe) to scan and repair the system files. If some files cannot be repaired automatically, you may replace them manually. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft KB and TechNet articles: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 Advanced guidelines for diagnosing and fixing servicing corruption http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619779(WS.10).aspx Suggestion 5: Run SFC /Scannow to scan and repair the system files. If some corrupted files cannot be repaired, you may manually replace them. For more information, please read the following Microsoft KB article: How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 Suggestion 6: Perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the whole system.
